Patrick Mahomes’ Career With the Chiefs
Mahomes was born in Tyler, TX, on September 17, 1995, to Randi and Pat Mahomes. Mahomes’ father, Pat, was a major league baseball player and played for 11 seasons all over the country for teams such as the Minnesota Twins, Boston Red Sox, New York Mets, Texas Rangers, and several others.
As a young child, Mahomes loved sports just as much as his dad. In fact, he planned to take after his father in his young adulthood telling Essentially Sports “My goal was to go to college, play three years of football, three years of baseball, and go [back] into the MLB draft.”
In high school, Mahomes was a jack of all trades, excelling in basketball, football, and baseball. In his senior year of high school, he was a star in both baseball and football and was even named the 2013–14 Male Athlete of the Year by recruiting website MaxPreps. In 2014, Mahomes graduated from Whitehouse High School in Texas before being drafted by the Detroit Tigers. Although baseball was an early passion for Mahomes, it never compared to football he said in a video with baseball legend Alex Rodriguez.
“It was my first love. But as I started playing football, I quickly figured out that I didn’t know what love was because I love football more than I love baseball.”

Despite Detroit’s offer, Mahomes had his eyes set on football at Texas Tech University. While there, he set several records including the most passing yards in a game (734 in total) against Oklahoma in 2016, led the Big 12 Conference, and was named Big 12 Football Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 2016.
Right after his junior year of college, Mahomes was drafted into the NFL before gaining his bachelor’s degree. In the 2017 draft, the Kansas City Chiefs selected him in the first round as the 10th overall pick as a backup for Alex Smith.
“I kind of gave a little inside info to the Chiefs and was like ‘Hey, if y’all let me go 12 or below, I’m going to get drafted by someone else,'” Mahomes told the Marca. “So I gave the Chiefs a little bit of info on that because I wanted to be here. I don’t know who was at 12 that time, but I knew right around there was where I was going to get drafted. My agent talked to Brett Veach and the Chiefs’ staff. I remember at about pick nine or 10, Veach sent my agent a little picture of a Red Raider with the ‘Guns Up,’ so I knew the Chiefs were drafting me.”
Since his first season with the Chiefs, where he passed for 5,097 yards and gained 50 touchdowns (only the second player in NFL history to ever do so behind Peyton Manning), Mahomes has been a star. In the last several years as the lead of the Kansas City team, Mahomes has guided the team to win three Super Bowls and has won the Pro Bowl, first-team All-Pro honors, and gained the league’s MVP title at just 24 years old.
