What Is Slow Girl Autumn? 3 Home Aesthetics That Celebrate the Fall Trend

As we take a collective deep breath after the fast-paced and sun-filled summer months, fall offers an opportunity to slow down and enjoy the beauty around us. In other words, slow girl autumn has officially arrived.

Like the vanilla girl summer, caramel girl fall, and the cinnamon girl aesthetic that came before it, slow girl autumn offers distinct characteristics that define the style. Chief among them is a slow, cozy, and nostalgic approach to fashion, decor, food, and more. Think soothing chai lattes, a good read, pumpkin or apple picking, and comfy sweaters (watch any of the fall episodes of Gilmore Girls, and you’ll get the gist).

So how can you embrace slow girl autumn in your home decor this year? We spoke to Julia Newman, principal designer and owner of Julia Adele Design, to learn how to incorporate this trending lifestyle aesthetic into your fall decor.

Cozy, Moody Bedrooms

If autumn weather makes you want to curl up with a toasty drink and binge your comfort show, creating a cozy and moody bedroom is the trend for you.

“A deep color in a bedroom embraces you and makes the room feel like a hug. Mix with it great textures like wools, bouclés, and all things soft and fuzzy to make it the ultimate spot to spend time reading books and drinking tea,” says Newman.

If you’re not up for a fresh coat of paint on the walls, consider bringing dark, moody colors to your space using decor or textiles like curtains, artwork, area rugs, duvet covers, and throw pillows. Add touches of soft and cozy textures to finish the look—and don’t forget to layer your textiles and pillows for the ultimate comfort escape. Lighting a spiced candle and switching on any warm-hued lamps will also create an inviting atmosphere.

Dark Academia Decor

Dark academia decor is all about moody colors, cozy staples, plenty of books, and reading nooks (Rory, is that you?). Newman says it perfectly encapsulates slow girl autumn. If you love all things vintage and bookish, consider trying out dark academia decor this fall.

Dark academia decor can be brought to life with simple decor swaps. It’s best to stick to a color palette of dark, cool hues such as olive greens, earthy browns, and navy blues, but don’t be afraid to try out some muted reds and pinks for a sultry twist.

Create a snug reading nook and outfit it with plenty of soft fabrics, book stacks, and a side table to keep your fall sip close. Mix in some vintage staples (mirrors, picture frames, candle holders, etc.), and keep the lighting dim for a pleasant ambience.

Coastal Grandma with a Fall Twist

The coastal grandma aesthetic might not be your first thought when fall weather settles, but this effortless and breezy decor style suits the slow girl autumn aesthetic in several ways. Cozy knits, a relaxed style, and a focus on creating warm and inviting spaces unite these two styles. Coastal fall grandma is the perfect iteration of slow girl autumn if you want a more polished and refined take on the trend. Dare we say, the Emily Gilmore of slow girl autumn?

“So what would coastal grandma look like in the fall? It would be all about comfort and knits!” says Newman. Delicate knits, scented candles, and a splash of fall decor throughout (think white pumpkins and tapered candlesticks). Swap pumpkin spice lattes for an oaked Chardonnay (and cheeses to pair) and kick back around a glowing fire.
